Are you Free?

Freedom–the right to do what you want, to answer to no one, to be your own person, correct?
No, according to Jesus. According to Jesus, true freedom means having the right master. In John 8, Jesus tells the Pharisees that that everyone (including you and me) are a slave to SOMETHING. No one (spiritually speaking) is truly free. What we are slaves to, according to Jesus, is sin. All of us. Without exception. When the Pharisees heard this they got real defensive, real quick…I bet the same is true for you, too. Don’t you think of yourself as a good person who occasionally does bad things? Well, Jesus basically says you’re a bad person who occasionally does good things. Something is your master–your career, your stuff, your health, a relationship in your life, etc. He goes on to say that unless He’s your master, you’re under the tyranny of something or someone else. So, who’s your master? Well, who’s your Daddy? If you’re a son or daughter of God, you will live like your Father…you will be a truth-teller, a truth sustainer, true to your commitments, true to your relationships and a true believer. If your father is the Adversary (Satan) you will be a liar– a deceiver, a cheater, a betrayer, and false friend and a destroyer of yourself and those around you. How can you tell which one you are? How are you living your life? If you know the truth it means you know Jesus. Not know about Jesus, but KNOW Jesus as your lord and savior. As the only one who can free you from your sins. As the only one who truly loves you. As the one who gave up His freedom, to die on a cross, in your place, so you could be free. So, once again, who’s your Daddy? And are you truly free?

Jay, what a powerful truth. When I heard the sermon Sunday morning I was struck by this morally challanging, God honoring truth. I just listened to your sermon again and was challanged to spend more time searching my heart for values that betray a different master.
