How Was Your Summer?

It’s probably a question that will be asked and answered many times in the next few weeks. For many of us the response will likely be either plain vanilla or multi-flavored. But for others, summer has been more sobering. Like one man’s response to me recently. “It’s been a very different summer – I lost my mother quite suddenly. It’s really affected everything much more than I expected.” Others of you have shared similar kinds of losses in recent months.

green funerals green coffins 300x228 How Was Your Summer?I can relate to more sorrow than usual this summer as well. I have attended or participated in three memorial services recently. They were close to my age – one was younger. I had been their pastor and in some cases, a friend. Even as I’m writing this, our 57 year old sister-in-law is struggling for her life with terminal cancer. Though there have been some lighter experiences this summer – pain, suffering and loss has tended to cast a dark shadow over them.

From an eternal perspective – I am very grateful these friends were following Jesus when their earthly lives ended. Which means – it was more of “I’ll see you later” than a final “goodbye.” The reality of the resurrection of Jesus over death is a guarantee that by His grace, one day we will experience the full presence and glory of God together. Hallelujah!

But these losses also have reminded me of the uncertainty of life. I ask you some questions I’m asking myself. What can I learn from my experiences this summer? What does the Holy Spirit want to do in and through me this fall? It’s true – “we worship what we value.” But, uncertainty can refocus me on following Jesus. That involves aligning my priorities around His mission of transforming lives – mine and others. It’s steering by faith into things that matter – our prayer lives, our marriages, using our gifts and … reaching out to lost people who need to find Jesus.

Suffering and loss can cause us to look honestly inside ourselves and make adjustments. As part of that process, the Holy Spirit can turn our sorrows into joy. So – how was your summer? And are you ready to respond to what God might have in mind for you this fall? Please join me on that journey – with His presence and in His power. Shalom.
