Gerry was born in Albuquerque to Christian parents. He spent his boyhood years on a farm in the Ozarks of Missouri. He moved back to Albuquerque to begin seventh grade and remained there through his bachelor’s program in mathematics and education at the University of New Mexico. Sherry was raised in a Christian family in Arkansas. She moved to Albuquerque when she was fifteen. Both Gerry and Sherry received Christ as children and have continued to be active church members. They were married in 1968. After Gerry taught mathematics for a year in a suburb of Denver, they went to the Philippines to teach at Faith Academy. They returned to the United States in 1972 so Gerry could do his seminary work at Denver Seminary and his doctoral work at Fuller Seminary. They came to Portland in 1980 when Gerry joined the faculty at Western Seminary. He was ordained to the ministry at Lents Baptist Church in 1983. In addition to teaching and lecturing at a number of colleges and seminaries around the world, Gerry preaches or teaches in many churches. He and Mark Driscoll authored Vintage Jesus, Death by Love, and Doctrine: What the Church Should Believe. Sherry is a computer professional, working for Retail Imaging. They have two sons, Donn and David, and a daughter, Cyndee. They have three wonderful grandgirls, Nicole, Joy, and Elizabeth. They enjoy making their home a center of hospitality and ministry to all sorts of people.
